Disclosure: I received this item as a part of a campaign for Wallternatives, and received this product in exchange for writing this post.  All opinions are 100% my own.

Those who read this blog regularly know how I feel about Vinyl. I think it’s an awesome material, and I love crafting my own signs and items with Vinyl. However, there are limitations with my personal vinyl cutter, most specifically the size. While I was at the Haven Conference in July, I got to see an awesome new line of Vinyl decals that is being produced by Royal Design Studio called Wallternatives. Wallternatives specifically has a line of decals that are perfect for you tween/teen and college-aged student. As it’s back to school time around here, and the Big One is now in Middle School, I was really excited about this new teen-inspired line, particularly their ChalkTalk™ Chalkboard Art.  You see, we have a bit of trouble talking around our house.  Boys don’t talk that much I’ve learned, and tween/teen boys talk even less.  I thought that installing a Chalkboard Vinyl Decal speech bubble would be a great way for the Big One to share things with us.

The other wonderful thing about this project was the time that the Big One and I spent together. It’s hard finding things that we can do together. He had a great time installing the speech bubble all by himself, with a little help from me. The parts that I had to show him, he actually recorded on his iPod, so I have a movie that I can share with you. You can see how we got the image safely onto the transfer tape.

As you can see, it does require that you burnish the image thoroughly before you apply the decal to your selected surface. Wallternatives does explain that their vinyl decals have a low tack adhesive, meaning they will not stick well to rough, textured, chalky, dusty, etc. surfaces. Clean your surface before you try to position your decal, and don’t try to stick them on popcorn walls! Luckily, the Big One had selected his door, which was easy to quickly clean and very smooth.

After the Big One positioned the decal where he wanted it on his door, he burnished the decal extremely well with the provided squeegee tool.  I had him go over the image, particularly the smaller dots three or four times, pressing down hard.  These decals are low tack, so you need to make sure that they are securely attached to your chosen surface.  Then I told him to slowly peel back the transfer tape.

My Mom Made That: Chalkboard Vinyl Decal Removing Tape

Once the tape was removed, the Big One had his very own Chalkboard Speech Bubble to decorate, and he had a good time with the chalk although I’m not sure how much he really communicated with me.

Here’s a bit more information about the ChalkTalk™ Chalkboard Decals that I thought I ought to share.  They feature a slight surface texture that makes them perfect surface for writing or drawing on it with chalk, and can be applied to any flat, smooth surface such as refrigerators, doors, and painted walls. What’s more they wipe clean with an eraser, damp towel or sponge.  If you have specific questions about Wallternatives, you can learn more by checking out their thorough collection of FAQs.
